Whatever you want to call them, they are not a necessity. Neither is a shotgun, but it's a lot more fun in you have one!
Watching a dog do what it loves to do is one of my favorite things. Retrievers love to fetch!
Dogs are a ton of responsibility. Just like raising a child, you must spend time with them. They cost as much as raising a child also. Get to know the dogs' attitude, temperament, and devotion. Yes, dogs have those things. Train your dog as you would teach a kid to catch a ball or ride a bike. IT TAKES TIME. The only way to get good at something is to practice. Same with your dog. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Always do your research before you buy a dog. What is the average cost? How much time do you have to spend with this new responsibility? Who are you getting the dog from? Are they breeders and trainers? What are the chances that you or the dog have a clue what's fixin' to happen?
A breeder will tell you every good thing you want to hear about this new bundle of joy, and its EXCITING! They won't tell you that his bundle of joy is about to destroy everything you own. Tables, chairs, carpet, the ENTIRE backyard, etc..
We went out this weekend with a friend's dog. What a good time! He got his dog from a rescue and after four years of training and hard work, he turned out to be a great one.
